Like other parts of the country, the Swachh Survekshan Grameen, 2018 was also started in Leh district on August 4 at DC office Leh.

Avny Lavasa, DC, Leh flagged off a van which is going to travel in the rural areas of the district to spread awareness among the general public about the ongoing survey and importance of cleanliness and hygiene as a part of Swachh Bharat Mission.

The drive is going to continue till the end of this month.

The survey aims to measure citizen connect and capture the efforts and outcomes of Swachh Bharat Mission. It will also rank districts based on their sanitation level. The survey will also help in improving the infrastructure development for sanitation services and their sustainability on the ground. The survey will help India to achieve the goal of Clean India by October 2 next year.

Avny Lavasa informed that a third party monitoring team of Government of India will visit all the districts of the nation and will rank them based on sanitation parameters like solid and liquid waste management etc. Citizens can also give their feedback and use Swachh Survekshan App to give their feedbacks.

She said that Leh town is one of the cleanest towns in India and hoped that Leh district will emerge among top-ranked districts with the collaborative effort of every stakeholder and active participation of people.

Talking about the successful introduction of solid waste management centres in Leh district, she said that in addition to Choglamsar, Diskit and Nimoo, one more solid waste management centre launched in Khaltse.

She informed that a total of 25, 000 kg of waste were collected from the Choglamsar waste centre till date.  Out of which 20,000 kg of waste has been disposed off or recycled scientifically.  

Moreover, a total of 7,000 kg of waste in Diskit and 4,000 kg in Nimoo waste centres were collected till date.

She said that the magnitude of its success would be understood by collecting about 40,000 kg garbage in the district otherwise these garbages are dumped in the open space of Leh district or in the Indus River.

Participation of public helped in the success of these waste centres.
