New Districts Committee concludes Aryan valley, Sham region visit
The new Districts Committee, led by Chairman Pramod Kumar Jain (IAS Retd.), wrapped up its two-day visit to the Aryan Valley and Sham Region on November 20.
During the visit, the committee engaged with local leaders, residents, and various delegations to gather insights and feedback on the proposed formation of new districts in Ladakh.
Representatives from Darchiks, Garkon, Silmo, Lalung, Gargardoo, Kukshow, Dargo, and Hanu presented their perspectives, suggestions, and memorandums. The committee listened to the diverse concerns and aspirations of these communities.
Representatives from Kukshow, currently part of Kargil district, expressed a desire to be included in the proposed Sham District. They cited challenges related to migration, livelihood, education, and cultural differences with Kargil district. They emphasized the potential benefits of merging with Sham District for improved access to services and overall community welfare.
Dargo delegation advocated for remaining within Chiktan Block under Kargil district, stressing the importance of maintaining their current administrative affiliation.
Darchiks and Garkon delegations strongly advocated for reintroducing the entire Aryan Valley, from Hanu Thang to Dambu Nalla, into a single sub-division under Sham District. They highlighted the importance of preserving their cultural heritage and maintaining community unity, emphasizing that this administrative change could significantly support their aspirations.
Silmo, Lalung, and Gargardoo delegations preferred to remain part of Kargil district, citing better access and longstanding ties to the region.
Representatives of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) in the Aryan Valley, including members from Darchiks and Garkon, supported the formation of the Sham District. They called for a sub-division encompassing Hanu and Beema, with Hanu Thang as its headquarters, to preserve their cultural heritage and foster community solidarity.
Nambardars and other representatives from Dha Beema and Hanu (Leh district) raised issues related to water facilities, infrastructure, and other regional challenges. They echoed the demand for a sub-division headquartered at Hanu Thang and highlighted the need for administrative upgrades to address local concerns and aspirations.
Chairman Pramod Kumar Jain assured all delegations that their concerns would be carefully considered. He emphasized that forming new districts should promote unity, cooperation, and development, steering away from sectarian divisions.
The committee, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Leh Santosh Sukhadeve, reviewed the concerns raised and assessed the on-ground challenges. They assured residents that their feedback would be reflected in the final report submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The report aims to capture the diverse needs and aspirations of Ladakh’s people, ensuring that new districts contribute to the region's inclusive growth and harmonious development.
