Leh commemorates Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo’s legacy on his 7th death anniversary

Late Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo, former Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of the LAHDC, Leh, was remembered on the occasion of his 7th death anniversary at Dr. Dawa Memorial Park, Diskit Tsal, on January 29. The event was organized by LAHDC Leh in collaboration with the Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo Memorial Committee.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Chering Dorjey, President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA); Tashi Namgyal, Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Leh; Ghulam Mehdi, Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Leh; Sonam Norboo, ADDC, Leh; Phuntsog Stanzin, State President of BJP; Gyal P Wangyal, former CEC of LAHDC, Leh; LAHDC Councillors; representatives from religious organizations; and family members.

Chering Dorjey, President of LBA, highlighted Dr. Dawa’s unwavering dedication to the people of Ladakh. He emphasized Dr. Dawa’s instrumental role in advancing the region's healthcare system during his tenure as Chief Medical Officer, particularly in the development and improvement of the Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital, which made quality medical services accessible to all. Dorjey remarked, “Dr. Dawa was not only an excellent administrator but also an honest person.”

Durbuk Lonpo, Dorje Stanzin, a close cousin of Dr. Dawa, fondly recalled his qualities, saying, “He was disciplined, a great administrator, and above all, an honest person. I have never seen anyone like him.”

Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee also paid tribute to Dr. Sonam Dawa, underscoring his key role in the development of Ladakh. Yakzee spoke about Dr. Dawa’s vision for a progressive and inclusive Ladakh, which continues to shape the region’s growth. He emphasized the importance of preserving Dr. Dawa’s legacy and carrying forward the values he instilled in the region’s socio-political fabric for future generations.

The ceremony included a prayer session, during which attendees reflected on Dr. Dawa’s significant contributions to Ladakh’s development. His legacy remains a source of inspiration for current and future generations working towards the betterment of the region.
