Leh celebrates 10 years of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign
The 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, a flagship initiative aimed at improving the status of the girl child and promoting women’s education across India, was celebrated at the Cultural Academy in Leh.
The event brought together key stakeholders to reflect on the progress made over the past decade and to discuss future goals for women’s empowerment in the region.
The occasion was graced by Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson as the chief guest. Other dignitaries included Shashanka Ala, IAS, Secretary of UT Ladakh; Santosh Sukhadeve, DC/CEO, LAHDC Leh; Shruti Sinha, SSP Leh; A.G. Zargar, ACD Leh; Tsewang Paljor, Deputy Secretary for Culture; Nasreen Maryam, President of Anjuman Imamia Women Wing; Tsewang Chuzin, President of the Women Alliance; Dr. Kunzes Dolma, Vice President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA); Captain Jigmet Palmo of the Ladakh Women’s Football National Team; Amir Sohail, Social Worker, Special Cell for Women; and staff members, including Anganwadi workers and directors.
Amir Sohail highlighted the challenges faced by women in Ladakh, particularly gender-based violence and the lack of legal awareness. He emphasized the urgent need for expanded legal education and awareness programs, especially in remote areas.
Leaders such as the Vice President of the LBA, the President of the Anjuman Imamia Women Wing, the President of the Women Alliance, and Captain Jigmet Palmo also addressed the gathering. They passionately spoke about the importance of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, advocating for sustained efforts in promoting gender equality, expanding women’s education, and creating opportunities across various fields.
Shashanka Ala shared her deep connection with the campaign, stating, “It’s not just about empowering women but about building a culture of gender equality for future generations.” She applauded the significant strides made in girls’ education in Ladakh and called for continued efforts to provide equal opportunities for women, particularly in leadership roles. “We must teach the next generation the value of gender equality and create a future where women can succeed,” she added.
Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson underscored the significant progress achieved under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, particularly in advancing women’s education and empowerment in Ladakh. While celebrating these milestones, he stressed the need for continued improvements in women’s safety and representation. He also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the LAHDC in health, education, sports, and politics, reaffirming the Council’s commitment to enhancing women’s rights and opportunities in the region.
As a gesture of gratitude, tokens of appreciation were presented to key officials for their invaluable contributions to women’s empowerment.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the progress achieved over the past decade while emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to ensure a brighter and more equitable future for women in Ladakh.
