Ladakh's new districts: Committee sets timeline, plans for public consultations

The newly constituted committee assessed various aspects of forming five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh. They held their first meeting at the camp office, Silk Route guest house on October 3.

The committee consist of Chairman Pramod Kumar Jain (IAS, Retd); Member, Kacho Asfandyar Khan (IAS Retd); Member, Tsering Angchok (IAS, Retd); Member, (ex-officio) Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse and Member (ex-officio) Deputy Commissioner Leh, Santosh Sukhdeve.

During the meeting, the committee deliberated on the methods to be adopted for public consultations, the terms of reference for the committee and various other aspects for creation of new districts.
 
The committee decided to do an extensive visit of Zanskar area on October 7 and 8 and meet with various delegations there. The committee shall be proposing boundaries of the new districts, headquarter locations, post-creation and other related aspects for ensuring smooth running of the new districts.
 
Ministry of Home Affairs announced five new districts Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass. A committee was formed by General Administration Department, UT Ladakh with the approval from Ministry of Home Affairs to review the formation of these new districts. The committee has to submit their recommendations in the form of a report within three months.
