Ladakh remembers Colonel Chewang Rinchen on his 25th death anniversary
Remembering Lt. Colonel Chewang Rinchen on his 25th death anniversary, a wreath-laying ceremony was organised by Ladakh Scouts Regiment Centre (LSRC) at his Memorial Park on June 30.
Colonel Chewang Rinchen MVC & bar, SM was a fearless and highly decorated officer in the Indian Army. He was born in Sumur Village on November 11, 1931. He is known as the 'Lion of Ladakh' for his extraordinary acts of courage in defending the Leh and Partapur sector in face of attacks by adversaries. He participated in wars in 1948 (Indo-Pak), 1962 (India-China), and 1971 (Bangladesh war for liberation), and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, the second-highest gallantry award in the country twice, besides a Sewa Medal for being part of the various operation. He is one of only six armed forces personnel to have been twice awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
Sharing the valour of her father, Dr. Angmo, eldest daughter of Col Chhewang Rinchen said, “At the age of 17 years, Chewang Rinchen, who was still in school enrolled himself in Ladakh Guards and received basic training. He then trained another 28 local youths and formed Nubra Guards. Leading the band ‘Nubra Guard’ he holds back the Pakistan invaders.”
“A book titled ‘ Lion of Ladakh’ is yet to be released which aims to narrate the story of Col Chhewang Rinchen's valour and inspire others. The book is necessary to keep him and his contribution alive”, she added.
Army officers, other dignitaries, family members, relatives, and friends of Col Chhewang Rinchen also attended and remembered him on his 25th death anniversary.
