Horticulture department organises annual exhibition at Batalik Fruit growers showcase 377 fruit varieties, highlighting the region's rich horticultural diversity
The Horticulture Department of Kargil concluded its annual exhibition for 2024-2025 at Batalik village on September 25, showcasing an impressive 377 varieties of fruits that underscore the region’s rich horticultural diversity.
Director of Horticulture Ladakh, Tsewang Phunchok, along with other officials, inspected the various fruit displays presented by local growers. He noted that the exhibition serves as a model for other farmers, encouraging them to adopt similar practices to enhance the quality of their fruits.
Phunchok emphasized that horticultural practices should evolve with changing trends and demands. He urged fruit growers to stay informed about advancements in processing, packaging, and marketing to improve their economic outcomes.
The Director highlighted that the exhibition provides an invaluable opportunity for fruit growers to exchange knowledge and urged farmers to collaborate with the department to benefit from its various schemes. He assured them of full support in cultivating high-quality fruits.
Dr. Mansoor Hussain, a scientist at KVK Kargil, advocated for the use of organic and vermicompost fertilizers for healthy cultivation and environmental conservation. He stressed the importance of organic and natural farming while promoting the integration of modern technology and methods.
Chief Horticulture Officer Mohd Zaffar urged farmers to effectively utilize government schemes and coordinate with the department to maximize the benefits of welfare initiatives. He spoke about the many varieties displayed at the exhibition, including apricots, apples, peaches, and pears, and expressed gratitude to the 21-Garhwal for their support in organizing the event.
Subject Matter Specialist Kunzang Wangmo provided detailed information on various departmental schemes available for fruit growers. Commanding Officer A.K. Maletha of the 21-Garhwal also addressed the audience, expressing his satisfaction with the event held in the area.
Officials reported that the exhibition attracted 105 fruit growers, comprising 54 males and 51 females. The displayed varieties included 34 types of fresh apples, 16 varieties of late apricots, 76 types of fresh peaches, 6 varieties of fresh pears, 28 kinds of fresh grapes, and assorted dry fruits.
The department also showcased various horticulture-related machines and tool kits, educating farmers about their usage and benefits. An expert committee evaluated the exhibition and awarded prizes to top growers in different categories. The Director and other dignitaries presented these awards to the winners of the locally grown fruits during the annual event.
The event was attended by Commanding Officer A.K. Maletha, Chief Horticulture Officer Mohd Zaffar, Subject Matter Specialist Kunzang Wangmo, Scientist Dr. Mansoor Hussain, farmers, and other officials.
