Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson of LAHDC, Leh, convened a meeting on September 12 to address security challenges affecting monasteries and to discuss measures for enhancing safety.

The meeting was attended by Dy. Chairman Tsering Angchuk, Executive Councillor for Culture Stanzin Chosphel, ADC Ghulam Mohd., LBA Youth President Jigmet Raftan, tourism official Fesal Iqbal Tantry, Dy. SP (HQ) Regzin Sangdup, as well as lama uchos and chakzot from 16 monasteries.

The focus of the meeting was on strengthening security measures around the monasteries. Discussions included strategies to prevent future incidents, such as upgrading CCTV systems, improving street lighting, and installing halogen lights to enhance visibility and security.

Dy. SP (HQ) Regzin Sangdup assured that the police are committed to apprehending the perpetrators and provided an update on the situation. He highlighted the need for an upgraded CCTV system to improve monitoring.

The meeting also reviewed tourism management strategies to better regulate tourist entry and exit. The LBA Youth Wing has pledged to support nighttime security efforts.

The Chairman assured that a phased upgrade of the CCTV network will be implemented, incorporating advanced motion sensors and alarm features to bolster nighttime protection. This upgrade will begin with an assessment and initial installation, followed by a review and additional enhancements. The possibility of hiring private security personnel under specific conditions was also considered.

The Chairman emphasized the council’s commitment to these upgrades and announced that a detailed survey will be conducted to assess the exact requirements for CCTV and other security systems. He urged all local communities and monastery authorities to remain vigilant and assured that efforts to enhance the safety and security of monasteries are a top priority.
