GDC Kargil celebrates International Women's Day

Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil celebrated International Women's Day on March 8, with enthusiasm and a collective commitment to this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality.”
The event was organized by GDC Kargil’s Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kargil, Ladakh. More than 300 students participated in the program, held in the college seminar hall.
The Chief Guest, Advocate Mohammad Iqbal from DLSA Kargil, delivered a detailed presentation on “Women’s Rights and Laws Related to Women”. He explained key legal provisions, including criminal laws for women (IPC & CRPC), the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956, human trafficking laws, and domestic violence laws. He emphasized India’s strong legal framework for women's protection and the importance of spreading awareness about these rights.
In her keynote address, Principal Prof. Disket Angmo emphasized that International Women’s Day is not just a celebration but a reminder of the strength, resilience, and contributions of women worldwide. She encouraged students to embrace possibilities beyond gender barriers, sharing a motivational message “Never say, ‘Can I?’ Always say, ‘I can.’”
Prof. Angmo also expressed happiness over the overwhelming participation, stating that such engagement reflects a shared commitment to empowering women and ensuring equal opportunities for all.

During the interactive session, students actively engaged by asking thought-provoking questions, to which the speaker provided insightful and satisfactory answers, contributing significantly to the success of the program.
A poetry recitation session featured 12 students from various semesters, who presented captivating poems in English, Persian, Urdu, and Ladakhi, centered around the theme "Women and Society.”
The inspiring Hindi movie, “Shunni Batey Sunnata”, was screened in the afternoon session, leaving a lasting impact on the audience by highlighting the challenges and resilience of women in raising children despite societal hardships.
Certificates of excellence and consolation prizes were awarded to participant students and girl achievers in various fields at both local and national levels, recognizing their dedication and accomplishments.
