Fisheries sector in Kargil gets boost through outreach and equipment distribution

The Department of Fisheries, Kargil successfully conducted a one-day outreach program for fish farmers at the newly constructed office of the Assistant Director, Fisheries in Kharool, Kargil on May 27. The event focused on the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP) and was held under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PMMKSSY).

Executive Councilor for Tourism and Fisheries, Kacho Mohammad Feroz, attended the event as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Councilor Ranbirpora, Abdul Wahid, Councilor Bhimbat, Abdul Samad, and Mohammad Amin Lone, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Kargil.

In his address, EC Feroz highlighted the growing potential of the fisheries sector in Kargil, calling it a "booming industry" that offers significant opportunities for economic growth. He stressed the need to raise public awareness about fish farming and its benefits, noting its increasing popularity among locals.

Assistant Director Mohd Amin Lone provided an overview of the National Fisheries Digital Platform (NFDP), explaining that it offers several key benefits to fish farmers, including registration, credit facilitation, aquaculture insurance, performance-based grants, traceability, training, and capacity building. “The NFDP is a game-changer for the fisheries sector,” he said, urging all stakeholders to register and take advantage of the platform under PMMKSSY.

The attending Councilors also addressed the gathering, reaffirming their support for fish farmers and encouraging wider adoption of fish farming practices.

During the program, the Councilors distributed essential fishing equipment, including trout pelleted feed, fish covering nets, digital dissolved oxygen (DO) meters, fish handling nets, and rechargeable torches to the farmers.

The Department of Fisheries announced plans to continue such outreach programs and camps across the district to promote NFDP registrations and expand access to benefits under PMMKSSY.
