Councillor Cha-led delegation meets L-G Ladakh, seeks restoration of Phugtal monastery

A delegation from Zanskar, led by Stanzin Lakpa, Councillor of Cha constituency, met with the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat on March 6.
During the meeting, Councillor Stanzin Lakpa apprised the LG of a recent incident in which the main assembly hall of Phugtal Monastery was damaged due to a boulder falling from the cave ceiling. He requested the LG’s intervention in preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to restore the assembly hall and store at Phugtal Monastery. Additionally, he urged the administration to ensure the provision of ration and essential supplies to the resident monks.
The delegation also raised several other concerns, including establishing an IGNOU study center in Zanskar to facilitate higher education for students and the inclusion of Shun-Sarchu and Rangdum in the newly announced Zanskar district.
After due deliberation, the LG directed the concerned officials to seek financial assistance from the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, for the restoration of the damaged assembly hall. He also instructed the Secretary of Higher Education to assess the feasibility of setting up an IGNOU study center in Zanskar. Regarding the district boundary concerns, the LG informed the delegation that the New District Committee had already submitted its report following consultations with stakeholders and the public.
