A vocational training center on cheese making and yak & camel wool value addition was inaugurated by Dr. Sonam Dawa CEC Leh on December 16 at the Department of Animal Husbandry, Leh.

Appreciating the initiative, Dr. Sonam Dawa said, “The department has started many things in the last two year like setting up of skill center and livestock feed making with local products  which will not only save a huge amount of money incurred on importing feed from outside but will benefit local farmers immensely.”

To ensure availability of maize used in making cattle feed, Dr. Dawa directed EC Agriculture to promote maize cultivation in the district.

Talking about the sterilization of stray dogs in the district, he said, “The progress was not up to mark but at the same time department has done a good job and working very hard. In future, there is a need for more practicality because if we work at the same pace it will take another fifteen to twenty years to cover the entire population. So there is a need to develop a system and to make a comprehensive program.”

Avny Lavasa, DC Leh said, “We have been working on the Pashmina likewise we need to discuss on camel and yak wool which is very important to increase the livelihood of the people.”

Dr. Mohammad Iqbal, Chief Animal Husbandry said, “The aim to set up this vocational training center is to employ unemployed people. We are working soon on a new project where people of the remote village will be motivated to rear yak to generate income.”

Skill training will be provided to the interested entrepreneurs of Leh district identified by respective Councillors of Hill Council Leh.

The progress of all the ongoing activities of Animal Husbandry was reviewed in detail and to ensure the best use of various diary related machines including milk Pasteurization Plant.
