134 kgs of expired, unhygienic meat seized in Zanskar; legal action underway
In a significant crackdown on food safety violations, the Food Safety Officer, Kargil, seized 134.700 kgs of expired and unhygienic beef along with 6.500 kgs of mutton sticks during an inspection in Padum, Zanskar.
The seized meat, discovered in sealed butcher shops, lacked proper labeling and failed to meet basic safety standards.
The inspection, triggered by a surprise market raid on November 19 was led by Tehsildar Zanskar Mohd Hassan and SHO Zanskar Inspector Gyalson. The operation uncovered serious violations under Sections 27(2)(C) and 27(3)(A) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, prompting legal action against the shop owners for negligence.
Additionally, random inspections were carried out at 25 other shops dealing with essential commodities, during which several product samples were collected for testing. The authorities emphasized their focus on ensuring strict compliance with food safety regulations across the region.
This swift action underscores the administration’s dedication to safeguarding public health. Vendors have been warned to strictly adhere to food safety norms, with authorities assuring stringent penalties for violations.
