A rally demanding justice to the teenage girl who was raped and murdered last year was taken out on her first death anniversary on 26th November. The message of the rally was to pressure the administration saying not to delay the justice. 

The rally started from petrol pump till polo ground and was organized by All Religious Coordination Committee of Leh and initiated by Brotherhood Welfare Society and Adventure Sports & Culture Society Thiksey. 

Presidents of the Religious Communities in their speeches came to the same conclusion that justice for the girl should no longer be delayed. They appealed that the culprit must be punished soon and for that a fast track court is much needed. The public appealed that such incidents must teach us a lesson that no matter what, a stranger must never be trusted easily irrespective of whether  he/she is of your religion or not. Requests were made to take measure so that such incidents of rape and murder don’t happen again. Giving self-defense classes, cyber crime security, active women police cells were some of the proposals made. 

Jigmet Youdon, a student of Islamia Public School gave her insight on how she felt about the incident happening in Ladakh but for which justice has been delayed. She said that she expects the people not to just remember her on this day but appealed the concerned authorities to punish the culprit as soon as possible. 

Rinchen Namgyal, President, Ladakh Buddhist Association, Youth Wing mentioned that the Police Dept. Leh is soon going to come up with self-defense classes and a night patrolling squad who will keep a rigorous check on the illicit behaviors in the society.

A memorandum was given to the DC Leh Prassana Ramaswami G and SSP Dr. Sunil Gupta which stated that the delivery of the justice must no longer be delayed. 

On speaking to two villager of Thiksey, they said that it grieves them that immediate punishment to the guilty has not been delivered as such a brutal incident has happened for the first time in Ladakh. 

The 16-year-old girl had gone missing on 26th November 2014. It was only after more two months on 9th February 2015 that the girl's body was recovered from the frozen channel of her village Thiksay behind her own residence.  

According to the press release by the District Police Office Leh, the case had been produced before the Hon’ble Court of Law for the judicial determination on 5th May 2015 against the two accused persons. The case is still subjudice in the Court of Law and reportedly out of the 67 witnesses 13 witnesses have been examined so far.  

During the interrogation the accused confessed having committed the crime.

Inspector Ghulam Ali said that when the testimonies of all the witnesses are taken by the court then the court will announce the statement of punishment. He said that a few more months or so will go in the completion of this process. "There is much possibility that the culprit will receive a death sentence, but that is in the hand of the court which only time will tell," he added.

Executive Councillors, Presidents of all the Religious Communities, Youth and Women wings representatives of the respective Religious Communities, members of Woman Alliance Leh political party representatives, nambardar, sarpanch and school children from various schools in Leh were present during the rally.
