After remaining closed for nearly six months, the Srinagar- Leh National Highway was open for vehicular movement on 11 May. It was closed for vehicular movement in November last year owing to heavy snowfall.

Around 300 light vehicles reached Kargil and proceeded towards Leh District on Sunday.

According to the drivers and vegetable sellers the road is still not clear and is risky between Pani Mataha and India Gate, still there are chances of snow avalanches.

The main market was crowded with peoples buying vegetables and fruits.

Border Roads Organization, which looks after the road clearance and maintenance of the highway, had started snow clearance work in March.
