Cultural splendor marks Apricot Blossom Festival in Garkone

As part of the ongoing Apricot Blossom Festival 2025 (Chuli Mendok), the Department of Tourism, Kargil, hosted a vibrant cultural event on April 13 at Garkone village in Kargil, a region renowned for its apricot production.
The event was graced by Member of Parliament for Ladakh, Hanifa Jan, as the chief guest, with Prof. Saket Kushwaha, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, serving as the guest of honour. Other distinguished attendees included Additional SP Kargil Nitin Yadav, nominated Councillor Regzin Gurmath, former CEC Leh Gyal Wangyal, officers from the Indian Army, national and international tourists, video bloggers, folk artists, and enthusiastic local villagers.
In his address, MP Hanifa Jan highlighted the cultural and economic importance of the Chuli Mendok festival, particularly for Garkone and its surrounding villages, which are prominent apricot producers in the district. He expressed optimism that such festivals would promote a positive image of the region globally and attract more visitors.
MP Jan also urged the Tourism Department, Kargil, to develop a dedicated annual events calendar and expand the promotion of the festival. He emphasized that such celebrations not only bolster tourism but also foster unity, peace, and cultural harmony across the region. He assured full support for future festivals and thanked all dignitaries and tourists who contributed to the event's success.
Prof. Saket Kushwaha, in his speech, stressed the importance of academic research in the Aryan Valley, announcing that the Dard Aryan language would soon be introduced as a subject at the University of Ladakh. He encouraged youth involvement in preserving the cultural heritage and lauded the efforts of senior musicians and folk dancers for keeping the traditions alive. He also expressed hope for the continuation of such cultural events in the future.
The program featured various colorful cultural performances by local artists and children, captivating the audience with their talent and enthusiasm. Earlier in the event, Councillor Regzin Gurmath delivered the welcome address, thanking all guests and visitors for joining the celebration in the scenic Aryan Valley.
The Apricot Blossom Festival is being celebrated across Kargil district from April 11 to April 21, offering visitors a chance to experience the enchanting apricot bloom and explore a variety of apricot-based products. The festival’s schedule includes events at Sanjaq (April 11), Garkone (April 13), Hardass (April 15), Shilikchey (April 17), and Gongma Minji (April 19), culminating in Karkitchhu on April 21.
