Social and Education Welfare Association raises issues of Garra tribe
A delegation from the Social and Educational Welfare Association led by President Jigmet Stanzin met Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur on April 20 at Raj Niwas.
President Jigmet Stanzin informed LG Mathur about the Garra tribe and their contribution as blacksmiths to the art, culture and rich heritage of Ladakh.
The delegation raised various issues, including the allotment of land for the construction of the office of the Social and Educational Welfare Association (SEWA); setting up a Zomal (smith’s workplace) and museum to showcase items made by blacksmiths of Garra tribe; recognition of work by Garra artists in the preservation of art and culture; provision for reserved elected seats for Garra people in both the Hill Councils; sanctioning residential plots/colony for Garra people; regulation of tral system, etc.
