The "Swachhata Hi Sewa" campaign for 2024 commenced in Leh on September 17, with an event held in Leh market. Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Advisor to the Union Territory of Ladakh, was the chief guest, while Sanjeev Khirwar, Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, attended as the guest of honour.

Also present were Commissioner Secretary Padma Angmo, Administrative Secretary Yatindra Maralkar, ADDC Leh Sonam Nurbo, and other officials.

During the event, Dr. Kotwal distributed PPE kits to the Safai Mitras (sanitation workers) as a gesture of appreciation for their dedicated efforts in maintaining public cleanliness. He praised the Safai Mitras for their vital role in ensuring public health and hygiene, and he commended the Leh Municipal Committee, led by Principal Secretary Sanjeev Khirwar, for their ongoing efforts to keep Ladakh clean. He reiterated that responsible waste disposal should not be limited to campaigns or special occasions but should become a daily practice.

Dr. Kotwal also emphasized the growing threat posed by plastic and other forms of hazardous waste, including hospital and electronic waste. He highlighted the importance of proper disposal methods to mitigate environmental damage and applauded initiatives such as the Municipal Solid Waste Plant in Leh, which provides sustainable solutions for waste management. He also informed the audience that a similar project has been set up in Kargil, which will become operational soon.

Moses Kunzang, Director of Urban and Local Bodies, UT Ladakh outlined the significance of the event and its objectives. He also extended a warm welcome to the other dignitaries and attendees, thanking them for their participation.

Following the welcome, all attendees took the "Swachhata Hi Seva" pledge, reaffirming their commitment to cleanliness and hygiene. The event also featured a vibrant Nukkad Natak (street play) performed by the Ladakh Theatre Organization, creatively illustrating the importance of cleanliness and promoting the "Smart Waste Segregation" method, which ensures proper and sustainable waste disposal.

After the formalities, guests and participants engaged in a cleanliness drive, starting from Jama Masjid and proceeding towards the Central Asian Museum. The event was organized by the Housing and Urban Development Department in collaboration with the Leh Municipal Committee.
