Kharnak herders concerned post sudden death of yak A team from Animal Husbandry to investigate the cause of death
Around 6 yaks died in two days and many are getting sick in Kharnak village of Changthang area.
According to the sources the yaks are having symptoms like saliva dripping from their mouth, nasal discharge, and heavy breathing.
When asked Animal Husbandry Incharge, Dr. Ladol about the incident she said that the sick yaks are getting treated, also we have informed the Animal Husbandry Department, Leh about the issue. A team from Leh will be sent to investigate the disease.
Dr. Stanzin Rabgais, Disease Investigation officer, District Animal Husbandry department said that a team headed by a laboratory officer will leave from Leh on December 13 to ascertain the cause of death.
He said that the disease is somewhat similar to one sporadically reported from Hanley which is named Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS) caused by a Bacteria (Pasteurella multocida).
Dr. Rabgais further added that the samples will be taken to test the cause of death and symptomatic treatment will be given on spot.
Yaks are the lifeline of pastoral nomads living in the high altitudes area of Changthang region. The animal is one of the important sources of livelihood for nomads.
