GDC Nubra observes International Sign Language Day

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Government Degree College, Nubra celebrated International Sign Language Day today under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on September 23.
 
 Addressing the students, the Principal, GDC Nubra, Dr. Tsewang Motup encouraged them to promote an inclusive community and learn and unlearn things in the process. The principal also shared several examples from his personal life and urged the audience to be more sensitive towards people who cannot communicate verbally.  
 
Assistant Professor, Stanzin Padma (Convenor IQAC) via power-point presentation briefed the students on the importance of sign language and its uses to promote a united and inclusive society. Raising awareness among the students, she shared much valuable information about sign languages used across the world as well as how and why people should learn them. The presentation also highlighted some historical facts about sign languages and the rising need towards promoting social acceptance of the hearing-impaired community. 
 
The speech ended with learning about the alphabet and numbers in Indian Sign Language.
 
President of India, Droupadi Murmu’s message on International Day of Sign Language, 2022 was also screened followed by a short film on the challenges faced by hearing-impaired people. 
 
The event ended with a pledge-taking ceremony in which the principal, all staff, and students pledged to make the environment and education inclusive and accessible to the deaf as well. 
 
The college has also been celebrating International Week of Deaf since September 19 where the Women Empowerment Cell organised sign language learning sessions and students of the college actively engaged in learning and singing the National Anthem in Indian Sign Language.
