GDC Drass observes World Forestry Day 2025 with focus on forests and food

In observance of World Forestry Day 2025, Government Degree College (GDC) Drass, in collaboration with the Kargil Forest Division and Pollution Control Committee Kargil, organized an insightful and engaging event centered around this year’s theme, “Forests and Food.”
The event aimed to raise awareness about the crucial link between forests and food security, while also emphasizing the importance of forest conservation in addressing climate change and sustaining livelihoods.
The programme was held under the patronage of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal, GDC Drass, and was moderated by Dr. Imtiyaz Hussain, Assistant Professor of Botany, and Shujat Ali Mir, Assistant Professor, Commerce Department.
The event was graced by Mohd. Ali, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kargil, as the Chief Guest. In his address, he spoke about the indispensable role of forests in maintaining ecological balance, ensuring food resources, and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change. He encouraged students to actively participate in environmental initiatives and become ambassadors of sustainability within their communities.
As part of the celebrations, a speech competition was held, where six students passionately addressed the impact of global warming on Ladakh, particularly in the Drass region. Their speeches highlighted the region’s vulnerability to climate change and underscored the importance of forest conservation in combating environmental threats.
Simultaneously, a drawing competition was organized, featuring 20 student participants who creatively depicted the theme "Forests and Food" through powerful and imaginative artwork.
Principal Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, in his address, stressed the pivotal role students play in protecting the environment. He remarked that such awareness events are instrumental in deepening students’ understanding of environmental challenges faced by Ladakh UT, especially in ecologically sensitive areas like Drass. He encouraged them to take proactive steps toward safeguarding their natural surroundings and promoting sustainable living.
The event proved to be both educational and inspiring, drawing attention to the urgent need for forest conservation to ensure food security, ecological stability, and climate resilience.
The celebrations are set to continue throughout the week, with a series of events planned to further engage the local community and promote environmental stewardship.
