Farmers from Chilam village explore advanced farming techniques at School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology

A group of farmers from Chilam Village in Tangtse Tehsil participated in an exposure tour to the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAS&T), Leh campus, on March 12. Organized by the Horticulture Department of Leh, UT Ladakh, the visit aimed to introduce farmers to modern agricultural techniques and technologies to enhance productivity.
The tour commenced with a lecture by Dr. Dechean Angmo, who discussed vegetable nursery raising and the benefits of cultivating vegetables in protected structures during winter to generate additional income. This was followed by a demonstration of different green vegetable varieties grown in a controlled environment.
Dr. Kunzang Lamo conducted a session on budding and grafting techniques for fruit plant propagation, highlighting their role in improving fruit production. Dr. Thinlas Nurboo provided insights into common insect pests affecting vegetables, fruit plants, and field crops, along with effective pest management strategies.
Additionally, Kaniz Fatima explained the significance of weather-based agro-advisory services and guided the farmers on a field visit to the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and the manual Agromet Observatory, illustrating how weather data can aid in farming decisions.
The tour concluded with visits to key facilities at SAS&T, including the Precision Farming Development Centre, the Automatic Weather Station, and the Apiculture Unit, providing farmers with hands-on exposure to advanced agricultural practices.
