Awareness programme on Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking held
Health and Family Welfare Department, Leh under the aegis of the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) observed International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking themed 'Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crisis' on June 22 at the University of Ladakh, Taru Thang, Leh.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh, PD Nitya emphasized the importance of such events and said that almost every country nowadays is facing the menace of drug abuse and stressed the need for awareness among all.
She also informed about the website launched by Ladakh Police drugsfreeleh.com and requested students to check out the website.
During the event State Nodal Officer, National Mental Health Program, Psychiatrist, Dr. Padma Angmo presented a presentation on Drug Abuse & Illicit trafficking. She focused on substance misuse disorders and the harmful effects of substance use. She also briefed the participants about the menace of drug abuse and how it affects the body and mind.
Further, Dr. Padma informed that the day is also marked to strengthen action as well as cooperation to achieve a society that is free of drug abuse.
Earlier, a debate competition on the theme 'A person addicted to drugs needs punishment, not treatment' was held where students of the campus participated and delivered their speeches.
