Ambedkar Jayanti: Leh celebrates 131st birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar
Tribute paid to Dr B. R. Ambedkar, Father of the Indian Constitution on his 131st birth anniversary.
Ladakh Buddhist Association Youth wing organised the event at pologround Leh on April 14. ADGP, Ladakh Police SS Khandare was present as a chief guest.
Talking about the life of BR Ambedkar, SS Khandare said, “ Babasaheb Ambedkar is known as messiah of human freedom. He was a social reformer who worked hard throughout his life to end social discrimination against weaker sections of the society”.
“Education is the key to achieving human potential and Dr. Ambedkar has applied this key in his life. He worked hard to achieve the best education and discovered the way to human liberation. He encouraged the weaker section of the society to walk on his path”, he added.
SS Khandare said that Dr B.R. Ambedkar thought about the development of the section of the society that is discriminated at various levels. He gave India a constitution that provided protection and safeguards to the people who faced atrocities and are discriminated at all levels. he stressed equalities and the Constitution of India is the strength of the weak and guiding light to everyone.
Reiterating the clarion call of Babasaheb Ambedkar, “Educate, Organise and Agitate”, Thupstan Chhewang, President of LBA said that the slogan reflects Ambedkar’s life, his philosophies and his struggle.
“The word ‘Educate’ is not just about academic but understanding the socio-economic condition. Education gives power and strength because you are exposed to the writings/ literature.
Education enhances the thinking and vision, you will understand the problem, the ways to be aware and find a solution. The word ‘Organise’ is to rightfully take the rights unanimously, in an organised way. And the last mantra ‘Agitate’ is to struggle”, he added.
Thupstan Chhewang stressed avoiding discrimination based on caste which is prevalent in society. He urged students to practice equality and uproot such evil practices from society.
Rigzin Dorjay, President, LBA Youth wing; Ashraf Ali Barcha; Ven. Shedup Chamba students from different schools also highlighted the life of Dr. Ambedkar in their speeches.
A cultural programme from the students of Druk Padma Karpo, Siddhartha Public, High School, Delhi Public School, Shey Lamdon school was also presented.
The principal architect of the Indian Constitution, Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow.
He belonged to the Mahar caste which was considered untouchable in Hinduism, and converted to Buddhism on October 14, 1956, in Nagpur along with 500,000 supporters, after studying the religion for years. He is not only known for his great influence in eradicating the social scourge of untouchability in India but also for having led a crusade for the upliftment and empowerment of Dalits in the country. On August 29, 1947, he was appointed as the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee for the constitution of independent India and after Independence, he was appointed as the law minister of India.
