Administrator MC Kargil inspects Solid Waste Management Plant at Kurbathang
Administrator of the Municipal Committee (MC) Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho, conducted an inspection of the Solid Waste Management Plant at Kurbathang on December 4 to review its operations. He was accompanied by Executive Officer Aarifa Iqbal and other municipal officials.
Project Manager of 3R Management Limited, Kapil Kant Niranjan, provided a detailed briefing on the plant's waste management processes, including waste segregation, shredding, mixing, curing, storage, recycling, and packaging. He also demonstrated the conversion of garbage into manure and highlighted that the plant processed 123 tonnes of waste in November 2024.
Key discussions included the manpower requirements, the potential for solar energy use to power the plant, and challenges posed by non-compliant waste, such as stones and sharp materials, which risk damaging the machinery. The Administrator emphasized the importance of creating public awareness to encourage better waste practices. He assured the implementation of measures to bring about behavioral changes among citizens, including social media campaigns.
Exploring the introduction of waste segregation at the source as a pilot project was also considered.
During the visit, the Administrator and the Executive Officer interacted with the plant workers, commending their efforts toward efficient waste management and environmental conservation. Concerns regarding the landfill site and its operations were also discussed in detail.
Imteeaz Kacho lauded the scientific waste disposal measures adopted at the plant and reaffirmed the administration's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly waste management practices.
