Leh :
A South America shot film based in Peru called ICAROS was screened at LAMO on 17th December.

The Director Georgina Barreiro and Producer Matia Roth who are from Argentina were also present during the screening. This is their debut film.

Georgina Barreiro said that her inspiration for this film was the paintings that she had seen which actually depicted the stories of the community. She said that many of the shots in the film have been directly inspired from the painting. She also mentioned that she is interested in making films that speaks about the culture and traditions of the indigenously isolated communities. She added that she will be exploring the Ladakhi culture and then hopefully make a movie based on the same.
Matia Roth who is basically a photographer said that the experience of producing the film was not at all easy, but has been worth it.

The film explores the spiritual universe of the Shipibo indigenous people who live by the Ucayali River, one of the main tributaries of the Peruvian Amazon. The film mainly revolves around the young fellow named Mokan Rono, who sets out to become a traditional healer mentored by a wise shaman (healer) and by his mother, a master healer.

But in becoming a shaman he has to go through the journey of discovering the ancestral knowledge of ayahuasca which is a brew used as a traditional spiritual medicine in ceremonies among the indigenous peoples of Amazonian Peru, from which they received the instructions in its use directly from the plants and plant spirits themselves.

Tsering Stobdan and Nawang Tundup who are both Amchis were also present at the screening. At the end, a discussion regarding the film took place between the film makers and the audience.

On comparing the film to that of traditional medicine practioners of Ladakh, one sees many differences but the commonality is that in both these isolated communities the making of the traditional medicines is highly indigenous with the aim of curing diseases.
