World Elderly Day observed in Leh HelpAge India demands universal pension scheme and medical insurance for the elderly people

Acknowledging the dedication and contribution of elders in everyone’s life, the World Elderly Day was observed by organizing a signature campaign by HelpAge India on October 1 at the main market.

Avny Lavasa, Deputy Commissioner, Leh, chief guest inaugurated the signature campaign board and manual home care for elderly assistance.

Avny Lavasa appreciated the contribution of HelpAge India.  She said, “Elderly people plays a significant role and is the support system of our society. Their contribution towards family was extraordinary and now it is our responsibility to give them the same affection and respect. There is a need for emotional support apart from physical and financial support.”

Mohammad Ali Abbasi, Project Manager, Help Age India informed about various projects like Home Care and Medical unit. Also, a team of doctors and nurses go to distant areas to provide free medical treatment.

He demanded District Administration for the Universal pension scheme and medical insurance for the people above 60 years of age and free medicines for the BPL.
 
The children of JNV School Leh performed a skit, conveying people about the need of affection required at this stage of life.

Padmashree awardee Morup Namgyal and Motup Dorjey, CMO Leh also spoke on the occasion.

HelpAge India voices the concerns of elders to help them live a more dignified life. Established in 1978, its mission is to work for the cause and care of disadvantaged older persons and to improve their quality of life. They advocate for their needs such as, for Universal Pension, quality healthcare, action against Elder Abuse and many more at the national, state and societal level, with the Central and State Governments.
