Workshop ‘Scrap to science’ held at EJM College

A four-day workshop on the theme ‘Scrap to science for the development of cheapest possible teaching aids for classroom teaching in J&K’ was held on July 4 to 7 at EJM college, Leh.

The workshop was organised by J&K Students Welfare Society, Anantnag in collaboration with Eliezer Joldan Memorial College, Leh. Also catalyzed and supported by NCSTC, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi.

Tsering Sandup, EC, Education was the chief guest and Dr.Rajender Singh, Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi was the guest of honour on the first day of the workshop.

Tsering Sandup said, “Education department is claimed to be prioritized among all the departments but when it comes to funding we get a very limited amount from the government. Thus, we are not able to provide equipment to the schools of Ladakh”. 

He also assured that Council is willing to provide funds for the workshop. 

“I would like to request the organisers to organise workshops in winters as the educators of Leh district have vacations. This will help to generate more resource persons,” he added.

Dr.Rajender Singh said, “The main idea of this workshop is to make the students understand the basic concepts practically. Students should involve themselves in the class activities. This training program will prove to be helpful in the creation of resourceful teachers in the field.”

Ranjeet Singh, Scientist, DST, New Delhi, briefed about the origin of the training program and he told the participants to ask questions and take full advantage.

Professor Deskyong Namgyal, Principal, EJM College said, “Schools lack basic infrastructure which leads to lack of teaching aids. This concept of learning science with the use of technology made through scrap should be implemented in all the schools.

The method will definitely bring change in the education system as there will be less of financial constraint.”

Lobzang Sherap, Councilor Khaltse, Konchok Angmo Principal, DIET and Tashi Tundup, Assistant Secretary, J&K Board, Principals and teachers from various Higher Secondary schools and colleges were present.
