Secretary, Animal & Sheep Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh reviews progress at Pashmina and Yak farms in Kargil
 
           Rudra Goud P.T., IAS, Secretary, Animal, Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries Department and Power Department, UT Ladakh, visited the Pashmina Goat Farm, Khangral, Kargil on October 27 to review the farm’s overall functioning and assess the progress of ongoing developmental activities.
The visit focused on evaluating livestock management, fodder development, and infrastructure enhancement works—particularly the construction of a new hay shed under the Special Development Package (SDP) 2024–25. The project aims to ensure adequate fodder storage facilities to support livestock feeding during the harsh winter months.
During the inspection, Secretary Goud interacted with farm officers, examined various livestock sections, and reviewed fodder production areas developed to meet the nutritional requirements of the animals. He emphasized the importance of scientific livestock management, improved breeding techniques, and efficient resource utilization to enhance both the productivity and quality of Pashmina wool.
He also reviewed the progress of various developmental projects and directed officials to ensure timely completion of works with strict adherence to quality standards, emphasizing that the outcomes must benefit local livestock farmers.
Secretary Goud was accompanied by Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, Director, Sheep Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh, who briefed him on the Pashmina rearing system in Kargil, livestock population statistics, and the district’s ongoing production activities. The Director of Animal Husbandry, Chief Engineer, PDD, and other senior departmental officers were also part of the visit.
Dr. Zakir Hussain, Officer In-Charge, Pashmina Goat Farm, apprised the Secretary of the farm’s role in promoting and conserving the Pashmina goat breed, alongside efforts in fodder development, pasture improvement, and genetic enhancement to ensure sustainable Pashmina production in Kargil district.
Later, the Secretary also visited the Yak Breeding Farm, Bodhkharbu, to review its operational status. He was received by Dr. Ghulam Mohd, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil, who presented an overview of the farm’s ongoing activities and initiatives.
