Lt Governor inspects new Leh Airport terminal, praises green technologies

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, conducted an on-site inspection of the New Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rimpoche Airport, Leh, on November 24, reviewing the pace of construction and the integration of modern, sustainable technologies.

During the visit, the Lt Governor expressed satisfaction with the substantial progress made and commended the project team for implementing cutting-edge green innovations. These include a first-of-its-kind geothermal temperature-regulation system, extensive solar power integration, and eco-sensitive architectural design adapted to Ladakh’s unique climatic conditions. He stated that the new terminal is poised to become a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in high-altitude regions.

Gupta highlighted that the upcoming terminal will not only enhance passenger capacity and improve air connectivity but will also serve as a prominent gateway showcasing Ladakh’s distinct cultural identity. He appreciated the incorporation of traditional Ladakhi motifs and architectural elements, noting that the design successfully blends regional heritage with world-class travel amenities.

The Lt Governor further emphasized that the project aligns with Ladakh’s aspiration of becoming a carbon-neutral Union Territory. He added that the airport’s green features reflect the UT Administration’s commitment to innovation, environmental stewardship, and the development of high-quality public infrastructure.

Reviewing key components such as passenger amenities, safety systems, terminal layout, and airside works, Gupta urged the concerned officials to maintain momentum and ensure completion within the stipulated timeline to meet Ladakh’s growing travel demands.

Project Director A. Umashankar briefed the Lt Governor on the operational features of the new terminal, including aerobridges, automated systems, expanded passenger circulation areas, and increased departure gates. He reaffirmed that the project is targeted for completion by April–May 2026.

Senior officials from the Airports Authority of India, Shapoorji Pallonji Group, and Commissioner/Secretary Civil Aviation Dr. L. Franklin accompanied the Lt Governor during the inspection.
