PHEY :
The damaged headwork of Phay village got converted to concrete bandh protection by Leh Nutrition Project, an NGO and was inaugurated by Dorjay Motup, CEC on June 16 at Phyang Nallah.

The villagers expressed happiness on the completion of the canal’s headwork.

Dorjay Motup, CEC, Leh chief guest said, “Being a flood-prone area, it is not possible to maintain a good headwork but the way technical engineers came up with such innovative idea is worth praising and other villages can also adopt”.

Applauding the work of Leh Nutrition Project in the different region of Leh district, he further said that LNP has been working in solving the water-related issues in many regions of Leh district and hoped that they will continue helping the farmers as always.

There are many potential plants and crops which the farmers should explore and work on it.

Ishey Paljor, Executive Director, LNP said, “After 2006 flood, people of this village faced water problem as the headwork has been washed away. People have to put extra effort to repair the headwork every year.  The villagers requested to strengthen the headwork and we in collaboration with RBS foundation, India started working to restore it. From last year, they have not faced problems with water and hope it will help them to meet their need.”

Appreciating the initiative of LNP for constructing the head work, Tsering Motup, Nambardar Phey said, “We have been facing acute water shortage due to unrepaired headwork.  The damage headwork needs repairing every day to irrigate our field. We are very thankful to LNP who help us to construct a concrete headwork which is very helpful”.

He talked about the good production of numerous crops and fruits in the village. LNP, DIHAR, Agriculture and Horticulture departments have been contributing in many ways to improve the production but due to the shortage of water, it becomes difficult for the villagers to irrigate their fields. He requested the CEC to start the work for Indus water lifting project in Phey.

Several issues were raised including not getting compensation for those who lose their dam and fields for internal road construction, the bridge for grazing land, electricity problems and others.
