Leh observes Youm-e-Ashura with solemnity and reverence
Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram, was observed with solemnity and reverence in Leh on June 26, commemorating the supreme sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
Thousands of mourners participated in the Youm-e-Ashura procession, gathering to grieve and pay tribute to the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions. The mourning was expressed through recitations of lamentations, chest beating, and prayers, honouring Imam Hussain’s stand against cruelty and his commitment to truth, justice, and the preservation of humanity.
Speakers at the gathering highlighted that the message of Karbala extends beyond mourning and grief, serving as a reminder of the moral responsibility of individuals and the collective duty to resist injustice and cruelty.
Sheikh Zain-ul-Abidin, President of Majlis-e-Ulama, emphasised that the sacrifice of Imam Hussain was made to uphold humanity and elevate the moral conscience of society. Quoting the importance of moral responsibility, he said, “Whichever community one may belong to, without the presence of an individual’s moral conscience, the community cannot stand tall for long. Thus, the lessons of Karbala encourage people to stand against injustice, irrespective of religion.”
He stressed that the message of Ashura remains relevant in promoting unity and harmony among communities.
On the occasion, Alamdar Health Services once again continued its humanitarian initiative by successfully organising its annual blood donation camp, a practice it has maintained since the 2000s, inspired by the teachings of Imam Hussain.
Members of the organisation informed that several other welfare projects are also underway. Speakers and officials present at the event appreciated the efforts of blood donors and volunteers, stating that blood donation reflects the spirit of selfless service and sacrifice associated with the teachings of Imam Hussain.
The guests and officials acknowledged the contribution of Alamdar Health Services in supporting patients and responding swiftly to emergency blood requirements across Ladakh. In a geographically challenging region like Ladakh, they emphasised the importance of maintaining adequate blood reserves and recognised the organisation’s role in encouraging voluntary blood donation.
More than 50 units of blood were donated during this year’s camp. Several regular blood donors were also awarded and felicitated with mementos in recognition of their continued efforts and contribution to society.
Concluding the event, speakers reiterated that the true message of Karbala lies in unity, brotherhood, service to humanity, and maintaining a strong moral commitment to justice. They stressed the need to carry forward the values of Imam Hussain and his companions, who stood united for compassion and resisted inhumanity.
