Kargil marks 77th Youm-e-Fateh, honouring 1948 victory of Indian Army
Kargil commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Indian Army’s historic 1948 victory—celebrated as Youm-e-Fateh—with great patriotic fervour at the Khree Sultan Cho Sports Stadium, Biamathang, on November 23. The day marks the liberation of Kargil from Pakistani raiders during Operation Bison, when the valiant soldiers of the 77 Para Brigade restored the vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh on November 23, 1948.
Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, presided over the event as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police Kargil Nitin Yadav, Brigadier Joshi of the 121 Infantry Brigade, and senior civil and military officers.
The commemoration began with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Kargil Helipad War Memorial, where the CEC paid homage to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the 1948 operations. This was followed by vibrant celebrations at the stadium, attended by veterans, students, youth, and local residents.
A ceremonial march past by Ladakh Police, NCC cadets, and contingents from various schools highlighted the programme, with the CEC taking the salute. Students showcased colourful cultural presentations, including a lively Purgi dance, a national integration dance, and a soulful Shina song accompanied by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band—reflecting the region’s rich cultural diversity and spirit of unity.
A medical and dental camp was also organised, offering free health check-ups and medicines to participants. The Indian Army displayed modern weapons and equipment, giving the public an opportunity to witness the nation’s evolving defence capabilities.
During the ceremony, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon felicitated Veer Naris and widows, honouring their resilience and the sacrifices made by their families. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the Girls Badminton Championship and the Inter-School Debate Competition organised earlier by the Kargil Sentinels.
In his address, the CEC congratulated the people of Kargil on this historic occasion, describing it as a proud moment for all. He said Youm-e-Fateh is a reminder of the courage and valour of the heroes who laid down their lives for a safer future. He added that Ladakh stands secure today because of their sacrifices, and called upon both the Indian Army and the people of Kargil to continue working together to protect the land, strengthen unity, and foster progress. He urged everyone to uphold peace, love, and harmony in the nation.
The 77th Youm-e-Fateh celebration served as a powerful tribute to Kargil’s enduring spirit—honouring its storied past while reaffirming a collective commitment to peace, security, and the continued development of the region.
