The Animal Husbandry Department, Kargil, marked a significant step toward strengthening the district’s dairy sector with the inauguration of a five-cow dairy unit, “Madina Dairy Farm,” at Kurbathang on November 25. The facility was formally inaugurated by Executive Councillor for Animal and Sheep Husbandry, LAHDC Kargil, Aga Syed Mujtaba.

Developed under the Special Development Package (SDP), the project has an approved cost of ₹12.24 lakh, of which 50% (₹6.12 lakh) has been provided as departmental subsidy. This financial support reflects the ongoing efforts of the Department and LAHDC Kargil to promote dairy entrepreneurship and create sustainable income opportunities for local livestock farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, the EC appreciated the beneficiary for establishing a modern small-scale dairy unit and encouraged more youth to take advantage of departmental schemes. He emphasized that such initiatives will help reduce dependence on imported milk and milk products, thereby contributing to local self-sufficiency in dairy production.

The newly established “Madina Dairy Farm” is expected to strengthen Kargil’s local milk supply chain through improved breeds, scientific management practices, and enhanced hygiene standards. The unit aims to serve as a model for other farmers aspiring to adopt structured and sustainable dairy farming.

Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil, reiterated the Department’s commitment to promoting progressive livestock farming in the district. He highlighted that financial assistance under the SDP is helping farmers establish economically viable dairy units, leading to improved rural livelihoods and enhanced nutritional security in the region.

The Animal Husbandry Department will continue to extend technical guidance, veterinary support, feed and fodder advisories, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure the long-term success of such dairy ventures.
