Councillor of Chushul Constituency, Konchok Stanzin, visited Maan Pangong A and B Panchayats on October 21, where he interacted with villagers and extended heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support over the past decade during his tenure as Councillor and Executive Councillor (EC) in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh.

The visit marked a moment of reflection on a decade of transformation across Chushul Constituency — a period Councillor Stanzin described as “A Decade of Development – Das Saal Benisaal.”

During his address, Councillor Stanzin highlighted several landmark initiatives that have redefined the socio-economic fabric of the region. He emphasised his mission to empower women through skill development programmes initiated in every panchayat, which culminated in the creation of the renowned “Looms of Ladakh” brand — now representing Ladakhi craftsmanship on the global stage. He described this as one of his proudest achievements, aimed at strengthening women’s livelihoods and building sustainable local economies.

He also underscored the allocation of commercial plots to 210 families of Maan Pangong A and B, which has improved living standards and generated new income opportunities. He encouraged villagers to retain ownership of their enterprises so that the younger generation continues to benefit from these opportunities.

Highlighting major infrastructure milestones, the Councillor noted that previously unconnected villages such as Maan Pangong A have now been linked under PMGSY road projects. Mobile connectivity has expanded significantly with the installation of BSNL towers at Phobrang, Urgo, Lukung, Kawa Gang, Shooting Point Spangmik, Maan, and Khakted, along with Airtel towers at Phobrang, Urgo, Lukung, Maan, and Merak.

He proudly stated that tap water connections now reach every household, and newly constructed Medical Centres — equipped with residential facilities for staff — have enhanced healthcare delivery across the region. Additionally, an Animal Care Centre has been sanctioned under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) to improve veterinary services and livestock health.

Councillor Stanzin further spoke about the rationalisation of areas under the Changthang Wildlife Act, the establishment of new Medical Centres at Phobrang, Lukung, and Chibra, and the strengthening of education infrastructure under the Special Development Package (SDP). Key developments include the upgradation of Urgo Middle School to a High School and the reopening of Middle School Phobrang.

He also highlighted ongoing works to develop world-class sports infrastructure at Merak, Maan, and Maan Pangong B, which will serve as regional hubs for youth development.

To promote winter tourism, Councillor Stanzin initiated the Frozen Pangong Lake Marathon, now a signature event attracting runners from across India and abroad. He also opened new trekking routes and tourist zones, promoting eco-tourism and sustainable livelihoods.

Acknowledging the value of partnerships, Councillor Stanzin thanked the Indian Army and NGOs for their support in various developmental activities. He cited initiatives such as Army-led Sainik School coaching for Class 5th and 8th students — introduced at his request — and assured that more such youth-oriented programmes are being planned.

As EC, Councillor Stanzin played a key role in securing several major projects, including the double-lane road from Tangtse to Pangong, sanctioned upon his request to the then Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, the DPR for Tangtse Hospital, and the transmission line project to Eastern Ladakh. As EC (Education), he worked to regularise residential schools and increase diet allowances for residential students in Leh district.

Reaffirming his commitment to public service, Councillor Stanzin stated, “Whether elections are held or not, I will continue my work for the people. My duty is to ensure that all ongoing and completed works are handed over to the public and benefit every household.”

He assured that all pipeline projects initiated during his tenure will continue to be followed up with the concerned authorities. Expressing deep gratitude, he thanked the people of Maan Pangong A and B for their trust, cooperation, and collective spirit that made the constituency’s remarkable progress possible.

“Through sincere and unbiased service, Chushul Constituency has gained both national and international recognition, becoming a focal point of discussion for its development and resilience,” he added.

In recognition of his contributions, Nambardar Maan Pangong A, Rigzen Angdus, presented a token of appreciation and lauded Councillor Stanzin’s decade-long dedication, stating that the people “elected the right person for the right cause.” Nambardar Phobrang, Konchok Nurboo, also extended his gratitude, saying that Councillor Stanzin has set an example of honest and people-centric leadership for the entire Ladakh region.
